Tofu Steaks Glazed

Tofu Steaks Glazed

These delicious Tofu Steaks are a nutritious and wholesome vegan/gluten-free meal. Serve the tofu with rice, quinoa and/or steamed vegetables. The tofu is marinated and infused with an easy and scrumptious sauce and then baked to perfection.

Cut the tofu into even slices (I prefer to cut them about 1/4″ thick but cut them the thickness you prefer) and cut each of those slices into half. If you use water-packed tofu, drain as much water as possible before slicing and marinating.

Mix together the ingredients for the marinade in a flat, shallow dish and add the tofu slices to marinate for at least an hour. Ensure the tofu is fully submerged and turn every 20 minutes. Tofu is a sponge in that it absorbs all the favours of sauces and spices in a marinade.

Once the tofu is finished marinating, transfer the slices onto a flat baking dish lined with parchment paper and bake. While the tofu bakes, take the remaining marinade, thicken and reduce it. When the tofu is ready to serve, pour the thickened marinade over the baked slices and enjoy your tofu steaks!

Instructions
  1. Rinse and dry the tofu and cut into 1/4 inch thick slices and place on a towel to drain 5-10 minutes.
  2. In a long and flat container, mix together all the marinade ingredients except the cornstarch.
  3. Add the tofu slices into the marinade and turn over making sure both sides of the tofu are infused by the marinade. Leave the tofu in the marinade for an hour, turning every 20 minutes.
  4. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  5. Lay parchment paper on a flat baking pan and place the marinated tofu slices on it in a single layer. Bake uncovered for 25 minutes, turning the slices over about halfway through. The tofu should be brown and almost dry.
  6. While the tofu is baking, pour the remaining marinade in a small saucepan. Add the cornstarch in a small bowl and dissolve it in a little cold water (2 tablespoons). Add the cornstarch liquid into the marinade, mixing constantly. Turn the heat to medium and let the mixture boil and thicken.
  7. Place the baked tofu onto a serving dish and pour the thicken marinade over the slices.
  8. Serve hot with rice, quinoa or steamed vegetables.
